In August, the U.S.-based NGO Rebirth Armenia organized a fundraising campaign to support Ayo!’s recently completed Backpacks for Berd project. The history of the FAR-Rebirth Armenia partnership, however, goes back to 2015 when Rebirth’s mother-daughter team of Araxie and Anahit Cass first visited the Berd Region where FAR implements the Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program (BCPP).

[BCPP]: Five More Schools Renovated in Tavush Province image

The children could hardly contain their excitement as their guests gathered in their kindergarten’s newly renovated kitchen. For more than 35 years, generations of children at the school had become comfortable with the kitchen’s musty walls and its damaged floor, windows, and doors. There had been no appropriate space to prepare daily meals, and no actual place where the children could sit and eat their food.

What’s this?” she says. “It’s a bit,” he says, shortening the word for rabbit. “And this one?” “It’s a fly.” (meaning butterfly) Dr. Nazanyan’s questions are part of a new study initiated by FAR’s healthcare team, which focuses on assessing the cognitive and mental development of toddlers (nine to 36 months old), and the ability to shape a child’s perceptual, mental, cognitive, and speech abilities.

[BCPP]: Supporting Teach For Armenia Fellows in Border Communities image

In 2017, FAR, as part of its Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program (BCPP), conducted a survey in Tavush Province to understand where the Berd Region’s public schools stood in terms of having qualified teachers. We found there was a dearth of teachers for subjects like math, chemistry, biology, English, history, etc. As a result, we developed a partnership with Teach for Armenia so that select fellows could start teaching in Berd and its surrounding communities, which is where FAR has been implementing BCPP for the past five years.

Arev Nersisyan’s day kicks off with a special morning ritual. “Morning is a sacred part of my day,” she said cheerfully. “I make two cups of coffee for my husband and I, and we enjoy it on our balcony. Then we greet our livestock by slowly walking to the garden before moving on with our daily routine. After that, I rush to school, and Viktor to the bank.”

For the past four years FAR has cooperated with Byurakan through a partnership that has brought schoolchildren to the observatory during their vacation to explore its many facilities, interact with local researchers, observe the sky through the telescope, and also do some nearby trekking.
