In August, the U.S.-based NGO Rebirth Armenia organized a fundraising campaign to support Ayo!’s recently completed Backpacks for Berd project. The history of the FAR-Rebirth Armenia partnership, however, goes back to 2015 when Rebirth’s mother-daughter team of Araxie and Anahit Cass first visited the Berd Region where FAR implements the Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program (BCPP).

[FAR Economic Development]: FAR Donors and Friends Excited to Learn about Zangakatun’s Community Development Program image

Fund for Armenian Relief’s Zangakatun Community Development program was born as a collaboration between FAR and local farmers. While Zangakatun is famous for a variety of traditionally grown apples, very often its farmers faced challenges as they did not have adequate storage facilities, and were continually faced with the challenge to either rapidly sell their entire harvest or experience significant losses.

[BCPP]: Supporting Teach For Armenia Fellows in Border Communities image

In 2017, FAR, as part of its Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program (BCPP), conducted a survey in Tavush Province to understand where the Berd Region’s public schools stood in terms of having qualified teachers. We found there was a dearth of teachers for subjects like math, chemistry, biology, English, history, etc. As a result, we developed a partnership with Teach for Armenia so that select fellows could start teaching in Berd and its surrounding communities, which is where FAR has been implementing BCPP for the past five years.

Constructing and rehabilitating potable water systems is an important part of FAR’s Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program (BCPP). A multi-faceted and comprehensive project to reduce the effects of poverty in the Berd Region of Tavush, BCPP aims to strengthen overall economic and agricultural activity, infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
