Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of Armenia’s schools have deteriorated. Over the past few years, FAR has rebuilt, refurbished and renovated over 10 primary and secondary schools throughout the nation, providing students with modern educational tools and safe learning environments.
One school that has received long-term assistance from FAR is the Azad Shishian Octet Music School in Gyumri, which was completely destroyed in the 1988 earthquake. For 20 years, students attended their lessons and rehearsed in temporary aluminum trailers that were never replaced following the quake. Throughout this time, FAR continued to provide students with musical instruments and tuition fee coverage. In 2013, the school moved into its brand new building thanks to fundraising support of FAR, along with partners like musicians Serj Tankian of System of a Down and Tony Iommi of Deep Purple, who committed to raising money for reconstruction.
