[FAR Partnerships]: FAR Partner Generously Surprises Students with New School Bags image

Thirteen students started off this school year with a nice surprise: new school bags filled with supplies. The gifts were generously sent to children in the border village communities of Tavush Province by Dr. Areg Mikaelian, co-founder and head of the Armenian Astronomical Society and leading specialist at Armenia's Byurakan Observatory. After his last visit to the region in May when he lectured to the students and teachers in the communities supported by FAR's Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program (BCPP), Dr. Mikaelian was struck by the level of poverty in the area.

[BCPP]: Bringing Astrophysics to the Students of Armenia’s Border Villages image

May 6th was a special day for the high school school students as well as the physics and astronomy teachers of Berd City and its surrounding border villages in Tavush Province when they hosted Dr. Areg Mickaelian, vice director of Byurakan Observatory and co-chairman of the Armenian Astronomical Society. It was Dr. Mickaelian’s first visit to the region, during which he gave a one-day training called “Our Understanding of the Universe.”

[Science and Education]: Astronomy Quest standard

Who of us as a child did not dream of exploring space and studying the birth, life and death of stars and galaxies? Who didn’t dream of becoming an astronaut? Most likely, we all did. Since last November, schoolchildren of Armenia and Karabagh have had the opportunity to study these subjects through a cognitive series of lectures that astrophysicist Dr. Areg Mickaelian regularly organizes for them at their schools. The program is called the Armenian Astronomical Society School Lectures, which were developed and sponsored by Dr. Yervant Terzian, the founder of ANSEF.
