[FAR Soup Kitchens, VOAH]: The Power of Giving Back Unites Youth and the Elderly image

On April 27, a group of FAR Mathevosian Scholarship Program students from Gyumri, gathered together to clean FAR Gyumri Nishan and Margrit Atinizian Senior Center and the surrounding areas. The results of the hard work that day came as a nice surprise to the elderly beneficiaries when they came in for their daily nutritious hot meal. And students, too, were happy.

Dr. Vehanush Marukhyan has defied the odds stacked against her, using education as the tool to propel herself forward. The eldest of three daughters, Vehanush grew up in poverty. “My father was unemployed and my mother could hardly care for us on her low salary as a chemistry teacher back then. I would never have been able to study if it not for FAR and the Mathevosian Scholarship," said Vehanush. “Really, if it wasn’t for FAR I wouldn’t have my bachelor’s.”

[FAR Scholarships]: One Gulamerian Scholar Finds Inspiration in Social Work image

Twenty-year-old Gohar Khachatryan is an ideal role model for others. Gohar started her bachelor’s degree last year in sociology from Yerevan State University (YSU). Recently she was chosen to spend the day as the school’s vice-rector, an honor and additional attribution for her CV. "They chose me based on my academic grades, active involvement in university issues, and my application. Then I underwent an interview and was the lucky one selected," said Gohar who was also chosen last year to be the Sociology Faculty’s dean for a day.
