Since the launch of the Math Honors Program in 2022, the number of students successfully completing the program has doubled, bringing more young people closer to the natural and mathematical sciences and helping them deepen their knowledge in advanced mathematics.
FAR’s Education and Science Programs Director, Eduard Karapetyan, credits this growth to the program’s growing popularity among young math enthusiasts. “I am very proud that students who have represented Armenia at international Olympiads are now among our Math Honors alumni, celebrating yet another impressive achievement. I encourage you not to be afraid to dive deep into science. Today, we see a positive trend where more young people are showing interest in natural and mathematical sciences compared to previous years — and fostering this interest remains our key priority. I am confident that even greater successes lie ahead for you,” said Eduard Karapetyan, as he awarded Certificates to the latest cohort of graduates — 21 students bringing the total to over 50 since the program’s launch.
Launched in 2022, the Math Honors Program stems from the collaborative efforts of the Yervant Terzian Armenian National Science and Education Fund (ANSEF) and the Armenian Society of Fellows (ASOF). This unique initiative, known for its rarity and challenging nature in advanced math, aims to inspire and equip young minds for the rigors of postgraduate life and careers.
Taught online, the program is led by Armenian-American professors based in the U.S., who wanted to contribute to Armenia’s future after the 2020 Artsakh War. In Armenia, local teaching assistants work closely with students, helping them navigate coursework and prepare for challenging exams.
Lucineh Kassarjian, Executive Director of ASOF Armenia, is certain that programs like Math Honors are vital in cultivating a culture where STEM education is both prestigious and exciting. "Through scholarships, fellowships, mentorship, and a global network, organizations like ASOF and FAR play a critical role in shaping Armenia's future math and STEM professionals in general, and fostering a new generation of innovators and problem-solvers."
This year, students explored the fundamentals of mathematical analysis with real numbers, followed by an in-depth study of function sequences, function research, and other advanced topics.
“The topics we cover here go deeper than what we typically study at university. At university, many results are simply presented, but here we learn the internal logic and reasoning behind them. This helps us develop strong mathematical intuition and better navigate unfamiliar problems,” shared Vahan Baghdasaryan, an 18-year-old first-year student at Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics, who proudly completed this challenging and rewarding phase of the Math Honors Program and received his Certificate.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all graduates and wish them continued success in their academic journeys and beyond!
