Construction of Ounjian School extension has started

Translated from an Armenian article written by Levon Lachikyan

Dr. Hovhannes (John) Ounjian is one of the old friends and benefactors of the Fund for Armenian Relief. As a result of his generous donation in 2000, the # 21 secondary school in Gyumri, ruined due to the 1988 earthquake, was reconstructed. Shortly after the relaunch of the school, it was named “Ounjian Varjaran” (Ounjian School).

Today, this educational establishment is one of the best schools not only in Gyumri, but also in Armenia. Nearly 450 children attend the school. For the schoolchildren favorable conditions are created – light rooms, sport room and music hall, computer room, boiler room, large yard, etc.

Moreover, nearly 50 graduates continue their education at higher educational institutions thanks to the “Ounjian” Foundation. It is important to emphasize that New York Citizen Dr. Ounjian’s heart is in Gyumri, with 500 schoolchildren, and in order to meet with them he visits the Homeland several times during the year.

To complete and refine/improve the Ounjian School complex it was necessary to renovate and reinforce the four-story extension of the school. The Ounjian Foundation eagerly agreed to finance this program. According to the contract signed between FAR and “Kanaka” CJSC (Construction Company) on January 15 the construction of the School’s four-story extension started. The construction includes the building’s foundation reinforcement.

On this occasion, FAR Program Coordinator Karen Sargsyan and Chief Engineer Harutyun Hovsepyan visited Gyumri. They had a meeting with “Kanaka” Company’s administration and staff. Afterwards, a meeting was held with the School’s directorate.

The construction works will last 12 months.
