#DeepSciencing: Arsen Arakelyan for the Love of Science

In the pursuit of scientific advancement, the collaboration between Armenian and Chinese scholars to address Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), also known as Yerevan disease, stands as a testament to innovation and international cooperation.

Leading this monumental effort is Arsen Arakelyan, director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and a two-time FAR’s Yervant Terzian Armenian National Science and Education Fund (ANSEF) grant recipient. With humility, Arsen credits their achievements to the collective dedication and tireless efforts of his team, underscoring a shared commitment to the transformative power of science in Armenia.

“Science is a world where interesting things happen,” Arsen narrates, reflecting on his choice to live a life driven by curiosity and discovery rather than mere contentment.

This partnership with Chinese scientists not only aims to develop innovative treatments for periodic diseases but also to introduce cutting-edge genome editing and genomic engineering techniques in Armenia. The ultimate goal is to establish a strong foundation for precision medicine based on genomic research.

To bring this vision to life, Arsen has assembled a team of around 20 passionate and enthusiastic scientists, the majority of whom are also ANSEF grant recipients. “I’m the oldest one here,” he remarks with a smile, despite being just 45.

Arsen's advice to the younger generation and aspiring scientists is simple yet profound: never retreat from pursuing their passion. “If you already love some part of science, like me with bioinformatics, continue to keep that affinity strong. Of course, living well is good, but living interesting is no less good. Now, there is an opportunity to live interestingly and live well. You don't need to be afraid, if you are interested in the field, you should do it and you will definitely find something good.”
