FAR and New England Doctors Team up to Combat Hypertension in Armenia

We are thrilled to kick off another essential health initiative in Armenia aimed at improving blood pressure control among the vulnerable population in rural communities.

The Hypertension Management Project, in memory of the late Dr. Aram Chobanian, has recently launched in the communities of Byurakan in Aragatsotn Province and Khndzoresk in Syunik Province.

The project will begin with a comprehensive evaluation of the population’s health indicators by gathering data on average blood pressure levels, weight, and critical behavioral factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and medication adherence. To facilitate this, we have collaborated with local high school students to conduct surveys and input data into a specialized system developed by us.

“Through this detailed survey, we aim to understand the prevalence of high blood pressure among 17 and 60+ y/s in these communities, how patients manage their condition, and their adherence to prescribed treatments. Based on our findings, we will implement targeted interventions following the WHO HEARTS technical package, which provides evidence-based strategies for cardiovascular disease prevention and control. For individuals struggling with medication adherence, we will provide the necessary support—whether through nurse follow-ups, medication supply, or education. We will actively address gaps in patient monitoring, ensuring healthcare professionals offer additional guidance for those who believe they are managing well but may not be adhering to their treatment,” says Hambarzdum Simonyan, FAR Health Programs Director, highlighting the higher risks of hypertension in the selected communities.

This project will span one year, and upon completion, we will conduct a follow-up survey to compare results and measure the impact of our interventions. This final analysis will help us assess the effectiveness of this approach and its applicability to future public health initiatives.

Implemented by FAR, the Hypertension Management Project is a collaborative initiative between the Armenian American Medical Association (AAMA) Boston, and the Afeyan Family Foundation. The implementation in the Khndzoresk community of Syunik Province is carried out in partnership with the HENAR Foundation.
