“In the USSR Lennon is more popular than Lenin.”
-Aris Ghazinyan
On the peak of Beatlemania John Lennon said: “We are more popular than Jesus Christ”.
In atheist Soviet Union that comparison was given a somewhat different interpretation by millions of his fans: “In the USSR Lennon is more popular than Lenin.”
This word game, in general reflected the reality of that period – a time that came to an end 30 years ago today, when John Lennon was assassinated on December 8, 1980.
