Dr. Vehanush Marukhyan has defied the odds stacked against her, using education as the tool to propel herself forward. The eldest of three daughters, Vehanush grew up in poverty. “My father was unemployed and my mother could hardly care for us on her low salary as a chemistry teacher back then. I would never have been able to study if it not for FAR and the Mathevosian Scholarship," said Vehanush. “Really, if it wasn’t for FAR I wouldn’t have my bachelor’s.”

Avetik Nersisyan prefers work to his studies. The Tavush native is currently a student in Yerevan, however, he’s not interested in staying there for the long run. “It’s difficult to attract people to Tavush Province. It’s a border region with no war, but also no peace. But I think it is possible to cope with this problem,” he said. “Many people want to move to the capital from their villages; others even want to go live abroad. [FAR Scholarships]: Mathevosian Medical Residents Assist in Armenia’s Rural Hospitals. standard

Preparing physicians to serve in the rural regions of Armenia is one of the components of the FAR Mathevosian Scholarship Program. According to the contract signed between FAR, various regional administrations, Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) and YSMU medical residents, young physicians agree to work in regional hospitals upon completing their educations. Surgeon Eduard Bairamyan has been working in Dilijan Hospital, located in the Tavush region, since 2010 and provides his practical support to people. He also works on the hospital’s ambulance and he teaches surgery at Dilijan State Medical College. Educational program staff recently made home visits to applicants’ homes to conduct interviews before selecting the winners.
